There are so many things you can say about Alpacas, I do not really know where to start and I did not just want to copy and paste someone else's opinion about them onto my page, so here is my story...

For several years my friend had told me I should try Alpacas.  Now, I have been around animals all my life (horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, mules) and did not really think Alpacas would be the right thing for me since I was used to a different kind of livestock.  But eventually I decided to give it a try and I was truly surprises on how easy Alpacas are to take care of and maintain compared to other livestock.   Granted Alpacas are a more expensive investment than ordinary livestock, but since they are not raised for their meat and only for their fiber they can be insured in case of loss.   They are so much less to maintain than other livestock.  They do not challenge fences, although you should have good fences to keep predators out.  They breed anytime of the year so you do not have to wait for a particular season to breed the females.  They require much less feed than other livestock, since they utilize almost everything they eat they do not require much less.  They do not mow down a grassy field to nothing but gently nip the grass down so it will easily come back. They are fun and a joy to watch run and jump (pronk) in the field and have a soothing calming nature about them.  There is also the return on investment.   Since there is a demand for the high quality fiber as well as a high quality animal that produces such fiber, you can get a return on your investment selling off the females for reproduction and selling the fiber they produce each year.

Now that I have had a taste of Alpacas and compare them to my other livestock, I would recommend Alpacas to anyone thinking of investing in livestock.
